Laptop Plugged In But Not Charging
Symptom
The laptop recognizes the charger is plugged in (Windows says "Plugged in"), but the battery level stays the same or slowly drops. Or, the laptop only works when plugged into the wall and dies instantly if unplugged.
Common Causes
Testing charger output and battery health — a "plugged in, not charging" fault can be either component.
- Severely degraded lithium battery cells
- Damaged DC-In charging jack
- Failed charging IC chip on the motherboard
- Counterfeit or underpowered charger
What NOT To Do
Do not forcefully bend the charging cable at extreme angles trying to "find the sweet spot" to make it charge — this usually breaks the internal port off the motherboard.
