Laptop Turns On But Screen is Black
Symptom
You press the power button, the keyboard lights up, and you can hear the fans spinning, but the screen remains completely black. Connecting to an external monitor might sometimes show a picture.
Common Causes
Testing display output on an external monitor to isolate whether the fault is the panel or the board.
- Failed RAM stick or poorly seated RAM
- Blown backlight fuse on the motherboard
- Damaged internal display cable
- Failed GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)
- Corrupted BIOS firmware
What NOT To Do
Do not repeatedly force-restart the laptop by holding the power button. If the BIOS is trying to recover or update, force-restarting will brick the motherboard permanently.
